Communications

Communications
Communications is often considered the first link between the public and law enforcement. This link is vital in relating officer safety information to our patrol officers. The Cameron Police Department has seven full-time communications officers and one part-time officer.

Cameron's Communications Division provides 24-hour dispatch services for the Cameron Police, Fire, and Ambulance Districts as well as animal control and code enforcement. Communications officers are trained in:

  • Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement Systems (MULES) computer inquiry
  • Entry level emergency medical dispatching
  • Basic telecommunications training
  • Other specialties associated with professional dispatching of emergency services

The Division utilizes the Enterprise Edition of Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD), which streamlines the flow of information into and out of the center.

District Involvement
The Communication Division is also a major part of the Andrew, Caldwell, Clinton, and Dekalb Counties(ACCD) 9-1-1 District. The ACCD is the only true interoperable 9-1-1 communications system in Missouri.  The Communications Division also has the capability to communicate with the St. Joseph Police Department as well as the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department using an 800 mhz control station.

Communications operators operate two E-911 terminals that are located in the communications area. E-911 provides the communications officer with the phone number of the 9-1-1 caller, address, specific information about the caller (such as special needs, hazards, etc.), and a map location displayed when the call is received. E-911 allows the communications officers to better handle any emergency 9-1-1 call that comes in by providing detailed and necessary information.

Severe Weather
During severe weather, our communications division plays an important role. The Division will monitor the National Weather Service as well as the NOAA radio. If severe weather has the potential of impacting our area, the Communications Division will activate the tornado sirens and the cable television alert warning system.

Another service that assists the Cameron Police Department Communications Division during severe weather is the NW MO ARES and SKYWARN nets amateur radio groups.  The Cameron Police Department has created a partnership with these amateur radio groups in hopes of providing fast and accurate weather coverage.
