School Resource Officer
Officers in Schools
The Cameron Police Department has a school resource officer that is assigned to the Detective Division. School resource officers serve as a major link between the school district and the Police Department. A school resource officer's main duty is promoting a safe school environment for learning. School resource officers also help with improving the image of police officers with students and the rest of the community. Our program program began in 1999.

DARE
The school resource officer program allows police officers the opportunity to educate students on 105 with kidsvarious topics within a classroom setting. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program has played an important role within the school district. The Cameron Police Department's DARE program was implemented in 1991 and has been taught in the school district ever since.

DARE teaches students how to resist peer pressure and teaches them various ways to say no to a potentially dangerous situation. DARE educates students on how to deal with a bully and how to be good citizens. While in DARE, students are taught the negative effects that tobacco, alcohol, methamphetamines, and inhalants can have on your body.

Goals of School Resource Officers
One goal of the school resource officers is to give the feeling that police officers are approachable by students. Some ways that our school resource officer obtains this goal are by eating lunch with students, being seen during passing periods, and attending after-school activities.

It is important that students feel school resource officers are approachable. This allows students to feel more comfortable when reporting a crime. Being approachable also lets the students see that the officer is a person they can trust and can be comfortable talking to in confidence rather than seeing them as just an individual in a uniform. It has been proven that placing a uniformed officer within the school setting helps reduce crimes.
